My daughter, Grace, came into Robin’s studio as an advanced voice and piano student in the fall of 2021 with piano skill that reflected a decade of instruction, practice, and performance, as well as a remarkable voice that had been developed over the previous few years. After two years under Robin’s detailed leadership and direction, Grace’s voice improvement, in particular, was stunning. She went from a high-quality soprano for modern church hymnody to a young woman whose range, repertoire of musical styles, foreign language skill, and confidence mark her as a top 1% voice artist, with a commensurate improvement in piano skill that could not have been achieved from lesser instruction. While Grace previously demonstrated limited breath support and resonance, two years later she seems to have no limits on her ability to perform the most challenging pieces at the highest level. She takes an individual approach to each of her students, assessing their strengths and areas for improvement in accordance with their goals. Her attention to technique forms a solid base for any artist, no matter if their focus is towards the more classical or more musical theatre. Robin takes an upbeat approach to teaching, guiding her students with positive feedback on their growth. When I began with Robin, I was an intermediate-level student with quite a few years of choral singing experience and some individual instruction from various teachers in both Chile and New York City. Unfortunately, I had to discontinue my lessons with Robin because I moved out of the area. Robin is by far the best teacher I have ever had. She has developed a series of vocalises that target all aspects of vocal production to improve one’s technique, including breath support, resonance and access to high notes. She has also helped me with foreign language pronunciation, transposition to more comfortable keys, preparation for performances, and repertoire suggestions, including both classical and non-classical pieces. She is an accomplished pianist and can beautifully accompany any type of music I choose to sing. Robin is an encouraging teacher who has helped build my confidence and my ability to perform at recitals, where I have also had the opportunity to meet other students. I myself am a musician and music teacher, and while I was able to play a lot of pop and rock music, I didn't play much classical music and wanted to refine my technique. I had not taken a piano lesson after the age of 8. What I enjoy about working with Robin is that not only do we play the pieces of the piano but we also dig deeper and analyze the music using theoretical concepts, as well as understanding the composer's intention for the piece. Her year of lessons always culminates in a recital of all her students, which is a good exercise in coping with fear and stress.
